Tancheng County has cultivated and used Langya straw for more than 200 years. In 1913, under the guidance of Yu Aichen, a native of Tancheng, and Yang Shuchen, a native of Linyi, Yang Xitang, an artist from Sangzhuang, Matou Town, created a straw hat and named it “Langya straw hat”. In 1925, Liu Weiting of Liuzhuang Village, Gangshang Town created the single-grass single weaving method，the single-grass double-weaving method,developing the technique into weaving technique.In 1932, Yang Songfeng and others from Matou Town founded the Langya Straw Hat Production and Distribution Cooperative, and designed three types of hats: flat top, round top, and fashionable hat.
In 1964, the Industrial Bureau of Tancheng County established a straw weaving society in the village of Xincun Township. Technician Wang Guirong led Ye Rulian, Sun Zhongmin and others to carry out weaving technology innovation, creating double-straw double weaving, straw rope, straw and hemp mixed weaving, improving the original grass color to dyeing, designing more than 500 patterns such as mesh flowers, pepper eyes, diamond flowers, and Xuan flowers, and creating dozens of series of products such as straw hats, slippers, handbags, and pet nests.
In 1994, Xu Jingxue from Gaoda Village, Shengli Town established the Gaoda Hat Factory, introducing more resilient raffia as weaving materials, enriching the product variety, and incorporating modern elements, making Langya straw weaving products a fashionable consumer product. The products are mainly exported to more than 30 countries and regions including Japan, South Korea, the United States, and France. They have been rated as “Famous Brand Products” in Shandong Province and have twice won the “Hundred Flowers Award” for Shandong Province’s Arts and Crafts.
